Healing in Nature, Healing in Community
A Letter from CEO, Tasha Kennard:
There is a kind of healing that happens in silence.
Not the silence of being alone, but the quiet that comes when you are fully present—when you can breathe deeply, notice the world around you, and feel, perhaps for the first time in a long time, a sense of safety in your own body.
At Thistle Farms, we have come to understand that healing is not just something that happens in programs or conversations. It also happens in nature.
In the stillness of a garden.
In the rhythm of walking outside.
In the simple act of pausing long enough to notice the sky, the trees, the breath within us.
Nature has a way of reminding us that we are part of something bigger. That growth is not rushed. That cycles are natural. That rest is not only allowed—it is necessary.
For the women who come to us, many of whom have experienced profound trauma and disconnection, this kind of presence can be transformative.
Because trauma often pulls us away from our bodies. It disconnects us from our sense of safety, from our ability to feel grounded, from our awareness of the present moment. And healing, in many ways, is the process of coming back—back to ourselves, back to our bodies, back to a sense of being here, now.
This is why we intentionally create spaces at Thistle Farms that support that journey.
Our wellness programming, self-regulation training, and meditative spaces are not add-ons—they are essential to our model of care. They give our team and residents tools to manage stress, process emotions, and build resilience. They create opportunities to slow down, to breathe, and to reconnect.
Self-regulation is a skill. Presence is a practice. And mindfulness is a pathway.
These are the building blocks of a healthy, healing community.
We also know that this work cannot be done in isolation. Healing is relational. It happens in connection—with ourselves, with one another, and with the spaces we inhabit.
That’s why our approach is not just about individual healing, but about cultivating a community practice.
A community that values stillness.
A community that makes space for reflection.
A community that understands that caring for one another also means caring for ourselves.
When we sit together in a moment of quiet, when we walk together in nature, when we pause long enough to listen—we are doing more than just slowing down.
We are building trust.
We are creating safety.
We are reinforcing the truth that everyone belongs.
And in a world that often moves too fast, that kind of intentional presence is powerful.
It allows us to respond rather than react.
It allows us to connect rather than withdraw.
It allows us to show up for one another in a deeper, more meaningful way.
This is the invitation we extend to our broader community.
To our friends, partners, and supporters—we invite you to join us in this practice. To experience what it means to slow down, to be present, and to connect in a way that is grounded, intentional, and restorative.
Whether it’s through a visit to our campus, participation in our programs, or simply taking a moment in your own life to pause and breathe, we believe this kind of practice matters.
Because healing is not just something that happens within our walls.
It is something we carry with us.
Something we practice together.
Something we extend into the world.
At Thistle Farms, we will continue to create spaces where healing can take root—where nature, mindfulness, and community come together to support transformation.
And we invite you to be part of it.
Because when we choose to be present, to connect, and to care for one another, we are not just healing ourselves.
We are helping to heal the world around us.
