Becoming: The Courage to Change

A Letter from CEO, Tasha Kennard

There is something about becoming that requires both courage and patience.

Courage, because change asks us to step into the unknown—to take risks, to stretch beyond what feels comfortable, and to trust that something better is possible. And patience, because becoming rarely happens all at once. It unfolds over time, shaped by experience, relationship, and resilience.

At Thistle Farms, we witness this every day.

We see it in the journeys of the women we serve—women who arrive carrying stories of survival and begin, step by step, the process of becoming something new. Becoming safe. Becoming steady. Becoming connected. Becoming whole.

Their courage is not abstract. It is lived.

It is choosing to stay when everything in you says run.
It is trying again after setbacks.
It is learning to trust—not just others, but yourself.
It is imagining a future that looks different from the past.

That is the courage to change.

And it is sacred work to witness.

As an organization, we are also in a constant state of becoming.

Growth has been a natural part of our journey—expanding programs, deepening our justice enterprises, building new pathways for housing and employment, and extending our reach into the broader community. But growth, when it is healthy, is never about speed for the sake of speed.

It is about purpose.

It is about asking, at every step: What do we need to sustain a healing community? What do we need to protect what is sacred? And how do we grow in a way that remains rooted in our mission?

In many ways, this requires an entrepreneurial spirit.

It requires risk-taking. It requires creativity. It requires the willingness to try, to learn, and sometimes to fail. It requires trusting that innovation and care can exist side by side—that we can build something sustainable without losing sight of the people at the center of the work.

But it also requires restraint.

Because not every opportunity is the right one. Not every path aligns with our values. And not every moment calls for acceleration.

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned in leadership is that pace matters.

If we move too fast, we risk outpacing the very people we are here to serve.
If we move without intention, we risk losing the relational foundation that makes this work meaningful.

And if we don’t take time to reflect, we risk building something that is not aligned with who we are called to be.

So I find myself returning to a question often:

What does it mean to grow at a pace that honors both people and purpose?

For me, the answer lies in balance.

It is the balance between urgency and patience.
Between vision and presence.
Between building for the future and staying grounded in the now.

And at the center of it all is community.

Because becoming is not something we do alone.

It happens in relationship—with one another, with our partners, with the women we serve, and with the broader community that believes in this work. It happens in the shared commitment to love, to show up, and to stay engaged even when the path is not easy.

At Thistle Farms, we are becoming together.

And in that becoming, we are learning something important:

That courage is not just about taking bold steps forward. It is also about knowing when to pause, to listen, and to ensure that every step we take is grounded in care.

That growth is not just about expansion.
It is about depth, integrity, and sustainability.

And that true success is not measured by how quickly we move, but by how faithfully we stay aligned with our purpose.

So we will keep becoming.

We will keep growing.
We will keep taking risks.
We will keep learning.

And we will do it with intention, with humility, and with a deep commitment to sustaining a community where healing is not rushed—but honored.

Because becoming, in its truest form, is not about arriving.

It is about becoming the kind of community where every woman has the space, the support, and the courage to change.
